  • EDTA
  • oxybenzone and its derivatives

two ingredients we use (because they’re amazing), that are on some people’s "no" lists... but they shouldn’t be!

with citations about why they’re great and why the controversies aren’t based on good science:

  • petrolatum/mineral oil: the most recommended moisturizing agents for allergy-prone, sensitive skin by dermatologists. despite unfounded claims to the contrary, cosmetic grade versions of these ingredients are safe and uncontaminated.
    • Combined effects of glycerol and petrolatum in an emollient cream: A randomized, double-blind, crossover study in healthy volunteers with dry skin. Vaillant et. al 2019
    • Review of data on the dermal penetration of mineral oils and waxes used in cosmetic applications
  • phenoxyethanol: this is a gentle preservative that, in the low concentrations used in our formulas ( <1% ) is not a concern. products with no preservative system are a concern. many alternative preservative systems do not protect against gram positive or negative bacteria in addition to yeast and mold, which is a big problem for skin. misinformation is definitely out there, so if you would like a reliable source, this page does a great job of presenting the extensive research that has been done about the safety of this ingredient.
